چکیده

In The Origin of Species, Darwin adduced a wide variety of evidence for his theory of evolution by natural selection. The evidence included morphological data, embryological data, data about the geographical distribution of organisms, and much more. In each case, Darwin’s strategy was to argue that the data could not easily be accounted for by the hypothesis of creation, but were exactly what we would expect if the theory of evolution by natural selection were true. He continued:

The royal entry festival held for Henri II and Catherine de Medici in Rouen (October 1550) was, by all accounts, among the most spectacular ever staged. It included warring gladiators, elephants, and unicorns; mock sea battles between French and Portuguese ships; a parade of captives from recent victories over the English; pageants with Roman gods, nymphs, and muses; and a whole array of exotic...

Bruno Latour is a vehement critic of the sociology of knowledge in general, and the Strong Program in particular. For those who are familiar with his books Science in Action (Latour, 1987), The Pasteurization of France (Latour, 1988) and We Have Never Been Modern (Latour, 1993) the pivotal role played by these criticisms in Latour’s writing will be evident. To those who only know his work by re...

Stability of the B-spline basis via knot insertion

We derive the stability inequality ‖C‖ 6 γ ‖∑i cibi‖ for the B-splines bi from the formula for knot insertion. The key observation is that knot removal increases the norm of the B-spline coefficients C = {ci}i∈Z at most by a constant factor, which is independent of the knot sequence. As a consequence, stability for splines follows from the stability of the Bernstein basis.  2000 Elsevier Scien...

The 7-oxo derivative of dehydroepiandrosterone is more active than the parent steroid and is devoid of adverse side effects in rats, monkeys and humans. In anticipation of possible therapeutic use we have sought more active, longer lasting forms of 7-oxoand 7b-hydroxydehydroepiandrosterones. The 7-oxoand 7-hydroxy steroids have been converted to glucuronides, ethers and carbonate esters. The sy...

Perhaps the most important point to make about Robert Klee’s recent Introduction to the Philosophy of Science: Cutting Nature at its Seams is that we need many more books like it: it is an engaging, accessible and comprehensive introductory text in the philosophy of science which manages to avoid sailing over the head of the beginner philosophy student without talking down to the working profes...
